California. At the turn of the 20th-century, easterners flocked to Southern California for the sun, weather, and the movie stars! People still are. Even 20 years ago, Orange County was dotted with groves within an earshot of Disneyland. Today you would be hard-pressed to find one Orange Tree. I live in Riverside County (next to Orange County), and downtown, you will find the original two Navel Orange Trees that all were grafted.

Winter brings snow and storms throughout the Midwest and East coast, while here in California, we are shipping crates of fresh sun-drenched citrus. On the crates' sides, you would find the beautiful drawing of the orchards, the palm trees around the groves, and maybe a snow-topped mountain in the foreground (yes, we have mountains with snow 1-1/2hrs from Los Angeles.

Here is a great little video from PBS on the Citrus Movement in Southern California.

Orange Groves in the Historical Park

Orange Groves in the Historical Park

When we purchased our home, the land had been groves just the year prior; a few miles away, we had orchards that would permeate the air with the aromas of citrus this time of year. Sadly, they were all bulldozed for housing. Around the city, you can see some areas with mini groves. I tend to drive to the California Citrus State Historic Park in Riverside to get my citrus. Pucker Up! It is Lemon Time. 🍋🍸. by George Geary

I am so lucky to reside in Southern California. A few times a year I head out to the Citrus Groves in Riverside. It reminds me to much of my childhood when we would take Sunday afternoon drives to visit family friends that owned Sunkist Groves in Cucamonga in the 1970’s. This time of year the blossoms are not happening as the trees are packed with fruit. In about 6-8 weeks I will return just to take in the intoxicating aroma.

The Gless Farm is on the same street as the California Citrus State Park, A Park dedicated to the industry in California www.parks.ca.gov. If you have the time the citrus park is well worth the visit. If you check the times of the ranger tours you get a bag of one each of what is in the garden that day. The gift shop has a great display of historical kitchen tools for citrus and also citrus related jams, cookies, books and soaps for sale.

I picked up 25 organic lemons, 12 “pink” Lemons and 7 large avocados for under $12.

Lemon 🍋 Drizzle Tea Cakes by George Geary

A very moist two-bite tart lemon tea cake!

To make these fantastic bites just like a pastry chef you need to invest in Silicone pan/molds. They are easy to use and store even easier then a metal pan. They also have many uses such as baking, freezing, creating butter molds, ice cubes and an array of baked goods. When baking I suggest that you use a spray with flour (Such as BakersJoy or Pam with flour. Place on a baking sheet to bake on, not directly on the oven rack. Spray the molds and after the baking wait 10 minutes and then pop out onto a bakers rack. Hand wash the silicones.

Here is one of them. Here is the link for Amazon: Silicone Molds

It's Almost Labor Day! Glazed Lemon Cookie Time by George Geary

One week off at Easter (Oh we can't say that.. I mean Spring Break) and two weeks at Christmas (Woops... Again I can't say that I mend Winter break) And a few other holidays like Thanksgiving (Can I say that?). Lincoln's Birthday, Memorial Day, Etc... If I would have known I would have supplied you with this cookie recipe! I also use to to grind down for my lemon cheesecake...

Enjoy! Recipe

Lemons.. Limonchello by George Geary

I have posted this recipe before. But I have had so many requests this week. The past holiday week I was the opening act/speaker  for Camp Blogaway.. It's a two day fast intensive camp on blogging and writing. I spoke about cookbooks with my publicist Trina Kay. Saturday night I broke out the two bottles of "chello" Cara Cara Orange and Lemon..  I like to use it in drinks (re: Lemon Drops, Just a little in a shot glass, etc) or as part of my Lemon Triffle.

Here it is.. and make sure you make a double batch!
